Auditor Galloway Releases Audit of Clay County Property Collection and Taxation System
– Jefferson City, Mo.
State Auditor Nicole Galloway today released her audit of Clay County’s property collection and tax system. Missouri law requires the state auditor to audit county collector offices whenever a vacancy occurs. In July 2021, the former Clay County Collector resigned from office and a new Collector was appointed.
The scope of the audit included the work of the office from March 2020 up to the date of the resignation of the former tax collector on July 28, 2021. The audit resulted in a rating of “good”.
The auditors recommended several areas for improvement. Include improvements in the controls and procedures of the property tax system, ensuring that written contracts are obtained for all towns and villages using the office for their tax billing and collection, and ensuring that monthly lists of debts are prepared and reconciled with bank balances.
