Betzer and Rutan host events on day one in Missouri
SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Indiana State currently lags Missouri State 104-63 after the events of day one as the Sycamores face the Bears in the double meet held at the Hammons Student Center .
The evening of Sycamores was highlighted by Madie Rutan’s first place in the 200 backstroke, while Bailey Betzer had a best of the season winning the individual title in the 1M diving event.
Rutan cut nearly two-thirds of a second off his previous season’s 200-yard backstroke record as the sophomore hit the wall first in his first event title of the 2021-22 season. The Roseville, Calif. Native (2: 04.78) was nearly two seconds faster than his teammate Carmen Alard Vegas (2: 06.71) clocking the fastest ISU time of the season in this event as Indiana State finished 1-2 overall.
Betzer broke her previous season’s record in the 1M diving event on the evening as her 245.10 gave her nearly six points ahead of Missouri State’s Adriana Avila (239.40) for the title. the ordeal. Betzer’s previous season mark of 222.75 came during the two-game against northern Iowa two weeks ago at the Vigo County Aquatics Center.
Overall, Indiana State finished first or second in seven of the nine events that took place that night.
The notable finishes of the Sycamores included strong performances in both relay events. Kaimi Matsumoto, Alexa Szardorski, Cotter of Alexandria, and Chloe Farro finished just one second behind the Bears in the 200-yard free throw with a time of 1: 36.48. Rutan, Elle Gilkerson, Marni Gray, and Chloe Farro was also second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3: 55.53.

The Sycamores are back in action tomorrow morning for the second day of the two-day game against Missouri State. The action in the pool is scheduled to start at 11:15 am at the Hammons Student Center.
