Hoarding has become such a problem in society, there is a popular TV show called “Hoarders” on A&E and professional organizers have become a new career for many.
The definition of “Hoard” is to store or store secret or carefully guarded money or valuables. In March 2020, we all got stuck with our pants down on the first stop and all of them became hoarders … at least of some items, like toilet paper and disinfectant wipes. Who would have thought that toilet paper would have been the cause of fights and friction.
Some take pride in their hoarding abilities and others cause problems with their relationships, life, and finances.
I never considered myself a hoarder and never thought I had a problem with it UNTIL I read a recent study by Studyfinds.org and saw that 62% of Americans are plastic hoarders !!!! Plastic collectors? What is that? Do you know the over-the-top sensation you get when you empty sour cream or cottage cheese into the fridge, then wash the container and keep it “just in case you need it”? Or when you go to the grocery store and instead of putting the plastic bag in the recycling or trash bin, you put it in the spare cupboard “just in case you need it”? Yes, this is plastic hoarding!
When I go to visit my mom you never know if you are actually going to buy Country Crock Butter or mashed potatoes from 3 nights ago !! I discovered that I will do the same … even though I have 2 cabinets dedicated to Tupperware-type products, I still keep these containers. Same thing with the grocery bags, I have a cabinet dedicated to those too! I mean, you never know when you’re going to need to wear lunch to work, do you?
I did a survey to find out whether or not people felt like an accumulator. Surprisingly, there were many who were proud of it and some who were accidental hoarders!
