IRS offers free e-filing service before tax day

(Gray News) – You may not need to pay for tax preparation services this year as the IRS reminds taxpayers of its free file option.

The IRS released tips Thursday for some taxpayers to save money on tax return preparation and assistance.

Taxpayers earning up to $73,000 per year can access electronic filing services free of charge.

The IRS said its free file option allows low-to-moderate income individuals and families, especially those who don’t normally file taxes, to prepare their own federal tax return, file it by e-mail and get a refund by direct deposit – all for free. .

According to the IRS, people who have not earned enough money to require them to file a return may mistakenly assume that since they owe no tax, they are not entitled to a refund. However, credits such as the Working Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and 2021 Stimulus Rebate Credit may qualify for a refund, even if that person owes no income tax. .

The agency said it also offers guided online tax preparation for eligible taxpayers with assistance in completing electronic federal tax forms.

This year, the deadline for filing federal income tax returns for individuals is April 18.
