Gerald David Marshall Gerald David Marshall went into retirement on December 31, 2021 at the age of 98 years, 6 months, 7 days. Gerald was born June 24, 1923 on a smallholding near Old Town, near Missouri Valley, IA. The family moved to Willow Park in the Missouri Valley before her first birthday. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School’s class of 1941. He was the first class to graduate from the new auditorium on 7th Street, now used as a bus barn. After graduating, Gerald worked at the furniture store Axtell and studied engineering at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa for one semester before enlisting in February 1943 to serve in World War II. He served in the South Pacific with the Army Air Corps until December 1945. He served his entire 34 months without leave or a 3-day pass. After serving his country, he continued to work at Axtell’s Furniture until 1960. Gerald then began working for the State of Iowa as a maintenance worker, snow removal, road work, cutting grass, installing panels, etc. He retired on January 1, 1986 after 26 years. Gerald married Evelyn Lenora Lizer on March 21, 1948. They lived in Willow Park near her family until they started their family and needed a bigger home. They eventually moved to 3rd Street and had 5 children, losing baby daughter Nancy at birth. Gerald lost his first wife Evelyn on March 3, 1999 after a long battle with cancer, days before their 51st birthday. Gerald continued to live in the same house until he was 90, enjoying being with his children and their families, going to the casino, fishing, playing cards, walking all over the valley Missouri, mushroom hunting and morning coffee at the Rand Center. . Gerald married Evelyn Marie Lynch on January 4, 2013. They moved to a separate apartment near Longview Nursing Home. Gerald was predeceased by his father Joseph Andrew Marshall, his mother Grace Mabel (Smith) Marshall, his first wife Evelyn Lenora (Lizer) Marshall, his granddaughter Nancy Marshall, his brother Joseph Arnold Marshall and his sister-in-law Beulah (Walker) Marshall. . He is survived by his wife Evelyn Marie (Lynch) Marshall, Missouri Valley. Sons Paul (Nancy) Marshall, Woodbine, IA, Robert Marshall, Pleasantville, IA and Roger (Julie) Marshall, Missouri Valley, IA. Daughter, Debra (Bill) Marshall Young, Council Bluffs, IA. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Military honors will be performed by Offutt Air Force Base and Woodbine American Legion Post. The family would like memoirs to be made at the Hospice des Générations. Funeral services were held on Saturday January 8, 2022 at Hennessey Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, Iowa. The officiant was Pastor Connie McWilliams, the organist was Nancy Marshall and the singer was Rex Gochenour. Vocal selections included “There an Old, Old Path”, “Amazing Grace”, “Nearer My God to Thee”, and “In The Garden”. The honor bearers were Maggie Marshall, Bryan (Marjorie) Knoch, CJ (Jess) Kraushaar, Matt (Hannah) Kraushaar, April Karstetter and Josh Karstetter. The pallbearers were Tim (Staci) Marshall, Katie (Cory) Preston, Lisa (Nick) Dozier, Nick Marshall, David Knoch, Julie (Gary) Loyd and Jennifer (Chris) Steele. Resting place is Rose Hill Cemetery in the Missouri Valley, Iowa.
