Obituary of Cynthia R. Shutt (1956 – 2021) – Colorado Springs, CO


Cynthia Dusty R. Shutt, 65, of Colorado Springs, Colo. Returned home to her savior Jesus on December 6, 2021 at Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs, Colo. After a brief illness.
She was born on November 28, 1956 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she lived with her birth family for five years before she and her siblings were placed in foster care. Dusty and her next younger half-sister were adopted when Dusty was 6 by Edwin F. and Helen Rhodes of Mishawaka, Michigan.
After the family moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, Dusty attended South Side High School and graduated in 1975.
She then graduated with a physical education degree from Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, graduating with the Class of 1979 in December 1978.
While in college, at a mixing school, Dusty met and fell in love with Craig Shutt of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and married him after graduation.
Dusty has held a number of jobs still working on his artistic endeavors.
After moving to the Chicago suburbs, Dusty earned an associate’s degree in fashion design from the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Before starting a resort clothing manufacturing business selling clothing in shopping around Lake Michigan.
Dusty was an active member of The Springs Vineyard in Colorado Springs, where she was a teacher and wherever the opportunity presented itself.
Most recently, Dusty was the founder and engine of The Pearl Merchants at Horse Alley Studio. Until his illness, Dusty was also secretary of the Old Colorado City Association.
She is predeceased by her father, Edwin F. Rhodes; his mother, Helen Rhodes; his brothers, Charles Sprague and Thomas Rhodes; and his sister, Mary Lisa Rhodes.
Dusty is survived by her husband, Craig Shutt; her adopted son, Ira LeRoy Fultz of Helena, Oklahoma; his brothers, Christopher Rhodes of Fortville, Indiana and Eric Rhodes of Little Rock, Arkansas; and her sisters, Priscilla Stevens of Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Stephanie Buck, McKinney, Texas.

Celebration of Dusty’s Life, 1:00 p.m., Saturday December 18, 2021, The Springs Vineyard,
4651 Centennial Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80919.
Interment will be in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster, PA.
