State XC Insight with Caleb HerMany Wyoming Indian Horses

He’s back at a venue for the 2021 Wyoming High School State Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

This year’s highlight event is at Ethete and hosted by Wyoming Indian High School.

David Settle of WyoPreps had the chance to meet Chiefs head coach Caleb HerManyHorses about this hosting opportunity, course set-up, conditions the riders will face, and more. It’s in the interview at the top of this story.

HerManyHorses told WyoPreps that at this year’s banquet on Friday night, Wyoming Indian High School will be showcasing more of its culture. He was also very excited about the special guest speaker. Billy Mills, 10,000-meter gold medalist at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, will address participants. Mills is from the Oglala Lakota tribe and lives in Pine Ridge, SD. His speech will be virtual, according to HerManyHorses.

If you remember, last year due to COVID the championships were held at three venues and the weather forced a date change a day earlier. Also, some places were running with snow on the ground.

The State Championships have six divisions and will start at 10 a.m. with the boys’ 2A race. The final race, at 12:45 pm, will be the 3A girls’ race.

For a preview of this year’s championships, WyoPreps posted a preview earlier this week.
