Waterloo man, horse injured in crashes in eastern Iowa

A Waterloo man was injured in a two-vehicle crash when a ladder fell from the back of a pickup truck on Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. on Interstate 380 at kilometer 35 near Center Point.

Linn County Sheriff officials said Julio Solis, 28, was injured when the driver of the van he was in swerved to avoid the ladder, which fell into the traffic lane of another van heading south. Authorities said the driver, Jamie Quinto, 38, of Waterloo, lost control of the van upon entering the median. The vehicle came to a stop on the inside lane of the highway.

Officials said Solis was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. They did not disclose the extent of these injuries, but classified them as not life threatening.

Authorities identified the other driver as Mark Mangas, 60, of Shellsburg. According to sheriff officials, Mangas was cited for overturning a charge on the highway.

Horse injured in accident in Fayette County

A man from Oelwein escaped injury when his vehicle struck a horse on Tuesday morning.

Fayette County Sheriff officials said James Fleming, 26, had totaled his vehicle when he collided with the horse, which was on the busy portion of Iowa Highway 150 / Palace Road about two miles to the north of Oelwein. The accident happened just before 5 a.m.

Authorities confirmed that the horse sustained minor injuries in the crash and was returned to its owner.
