Wyoming Cowboys lose starting cornerbacks CJ Coldon and Azizi Hearn on transfer gate | national
LARAMIE – Wyoming’s roster continues to suffer during an offseason war of attrition.
The Cowboys’ two starting quarterbacks Azizi Hearn and CJ Coldon listed their names on the NCAA transfer portal on Sunday.
UW has now had nine players who left the program to request a transfer, including eight since Tuesday’s 52-38 victory over Kent State in the famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
On Christmas Eve, Craig Bohl essentially posted an ad for a new quarterback starting in 2022 after Levi Williams and Sean Chambers entered the portal.
The UW head coach recognized the reality of the one-transfer rule and players who could take advantage of their own name, image and likeness (NIL) were biting the Pokes hard.
âOur staff have anticipated this move and have a clear vision to navigate these uncharted waters,â Bohl said in a Dec. 24 social media statement with a photo of current Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen. âAfter a successful early signing day, Cowboy Football will respond to the need to sign a quarterback through the transfer portal or junior college.
âWe think this is a great opportunity for a transfer quarterback to come in and have an impact on our schedule. We saw this before when we introduced Josh Allen to our program, and we’re excited for the next chapter in Cowboy football.
The Cowboys have a lot more holes to fill than at quarterback.
Coldon was third on the team with 66 tackles and led the team with nine assists. Hearn, who was on the senior roster of the roster but still has the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA, has managed 26 tackles and four broken assists this season.
Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel had previously lost strong starting safety Rome Weber and starting half Keyon Blankenbaker on the gate, as well as defensive end Victor Jones.
The UW defense must also replace linebacker Chad Muma, who capped his brilliant career with 13 tackles in the Potato Bowl. The Butkus Award finalist enters the NFL Draft after racking up 142 tackles and returning two of his three interceptions for touchdowns this season.
Isaiah Neyor is transferred after leading UW with 39 receptions for 791 yards and 11 touchdowns. The big star receiver announced a list of scholarship offers from other programs, including one from USC.
Bohl had enjoyed roster stability in recent years, but the loss of nine players on the portal is something the coaching staff will need to sort out.
Colorado State has lost 16 players on the portal since the sacking of Steve Addazio and the hiring of Jay Norvell.
Nevada lost 15 players on the portal, Norvell leaving for the same job with the Rams. Seven former Wolf Pack players follow him to Fort Collins.
According to the transfer tracker from Mountain West Wire, Hawaii (11), UNLV (nine), Air Force (seven), New Mexico (seven), Fresno State (four), San Diego State (three), San Jose State ( three), Utah State (three) and Boise State (two) all lost players on the portal.
